Intercessors often feel deeply. A headline becomes a burden; a burden becomes another name on the prayer list. Soon, compassion can turn into exhaustion, anger or helplessness.

God does not ask one intercessor to carry every crisis. He invites us into friendship, and friendship gives access to the portion of His heart He wants us to carry.

Abraham did not intercede for every city; he responded to what God disclosed concerning Sodom. Moses stood before God for Israel because he had learned to speak with Him “face to face, as a man speaketh unto his friend” (Exodus 33:11).

How Do I Pray When the World’s Suffering Feels Overwhelming?

Return from the pressure of information to the presence of God. Ask which burden is yours, receive His heart for it, and pray from fellowship rather than anxiety.

Romans 8:26 reminds us that the Spirit helps our weakness when we do not know what to pray. Mature intercession is not frantic awareness of everything. It is faithful agreement with God concerning what He places before us.

  1. Pause before reacting to the news.
  2. Ask whether God is calling you to intercede or simply informing you.
  3. Pray in the Holy Spirit until fear yields to His heart.
  4. Seek mercy, salvation and God’s purpose—not merely judgment.
  5. Release the outcome to God when your assignment is complete.

Intercession should transform the intercessor. If prayer consistently leaves us harsh, hopeless or contemptuous of people, we may be carrying the crisis without carrying God’s heart.
